International School on Satellite Meteorology (ISSM) 2026
31 Aug – 4 Sep 2026 Lipari, Aeolian Islands (Sicily) - Italy - Deadline for registration: 30 June 2026
ISSM school, organized by the CNR-ISAC in Bologna and the University of Naples Parthenope, is an advanced training program for Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows in physical, environmental, atmospheric or related sciences, and early career operational meteorologists and researchers, covering the major topics of Satellite Meteorology, sensor technology of spacecrafts and new space missions for meteorology and atmospheric studies.
ISSM 2026 that will be held on Lipari, Aeolian Islands (Sicily) - Italy from 31 Aug to 4 Sep 2026 will be enriched by new advanced topics: radiative transfer and inverse modelling of longwave radiation, the new frontiers open by EarthCARE mission, the evaluation of the impact of extreme weather on the cultural and natural heritage (CNH) and the investigation of the atmosphere through the promising future ESA missions WIVERN and CAIRT. A special section will be fully dedicated to the science and application of satellite microwave radiometry for understanding the atmosphere and detecting hail into the storms. Attendees will also learn the theoretical and technical characteristics of the microwave receivers equipping the small satellites by handling such micro-components during the lecture to better understand the major technical challenges of the miniaturization of electronic apparatuses.
OPENING LECTURE: Atmospheric water cycle: evolution, changing and amplification through observational methods (Susanne Crewell, University of Cologne).
LABS:
• Sensitivity of the upwelling atmospheric spectral radiance to climate change signatures.
• MW radiative transfer simulation of hail clouds.
• Working with the risk mapping tool for Cultural Heritage Protection (CHP).
EXTRA LAB - Capture your perfect storm
Short hands-on course on photography and movie making conceived to handle the main techniques to capture by lens the wonder of severe storms and lightning fugacity (Francesco Gennari, weather photographer and storm chaser).
ISSM EXPERIENCE - Moving into the myth
The registration costs also include the boat tour to the Vulcano island and a trekking trail up to the Great Crater of volcano to see active fumaroles, understanding the complex geology of site and enjoying the best panoramic views of the Aeolian Islands till sunset.
Registration & Costs
The registration fee is 650€ and includes teaching material, coffee breaks, lunches, and a special social dinner paired to “smoked” volcanic wines to celebrate the Italian cooking recognition as UNESCO cultural heritage.
