Curriculum “Earth and the Sun-Earth System”

This curriculum explores the complex interaction between solar physical conditions and the terrestrial environment. In an era where our global infrastructure is increasingly space-based, understanding the "Sun-Earth coupling" is vital for the protection of both space assets and ground-based technologies.

Research & Training Focus

The program provides advanced scientific and technological expertise in measuring and analyzing geophysical phenomena. Key areas of investigation include:

  • Space Weather & Mitigation: Studying solar variability, solar wind, and their interactions with the magnetosphere and ionosphere to prevent the destruction of critical infrastructure;
  • Atmospheric & Lithospheric Dynamics: Investigating how terrestrial events, such as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, influence the upper atmosphere;
  • Advanced Remote Sensing: Utilizing new space-based imaging and non-imaging technologies to characterize extreme events across various spatial and temporal scales;
  • Earth Observation: Developing techniques to monitor the Earth’s systems and understand the socio-technological implications of environmental changes.

Strategic Goal

The curriculum aims to train experts capable of navigating the entire "circum-terrestrial system," from deep space interactions to the analysis of lithospheric processes, bridging the gap between fundamental physics and practical Earth monitoring.
